AYO initiative for nature and environment sees huge response
KOHIMA, OCTOBER 5: The bustling State capital experienced a day of calmness and tranquillity today as vehicles remained off the road in support of the initiative taken by the Angami Youth Organization (AYO) in observing a day to contribute for the wellbeing of the Mother Earth and environment.
The AYO, on Wednesday, called for “A moment of solidarity to enable our environment” within the jurisdiction of Kohima district, beginning from 6 am to 6 pm, wherein all vehicles were asked to remain off the road.
Complying to AYO’s appeal, all mills/crushers/print/fabricating houses/workshops/cafes/constructing agents using planners and other power driven equipments, etc. within Kohima district also observed an ‘off day’ by ceasing their power driven machineries and activities for the day.
AYO’s appeal also included minimal and judicious usage of power on home appliances such as TVs/refrigerators/PCs, etc., and ceasing of engines at home and garage.
The initiative has been called to impress upon the present generation for an attitudinal and behavioral change towards our nature and environment, for a world that will enable a decent and convenient living for the future generation.
Towards this objective, the day was observed as a day with nature, a day without dependence on fossil fuel energy related life, and a day to enable our environment to recoup its vitality for human sustenance.
Though Wednesday was not a bandh, yet, the State capital almost wore a deserted look without the vehicles. On a working day, Kohima regularly experiences traffic snarls and honks, but Wednesday was one such day where the denizens of the State capital experienced a life quite different from what they regularly experience.
There was no restriction on human movement and activities; likewise, business establishments, institutions, offices, schools, etc, were open and were fully functional.
Some vehicles were also seen plying the road as people from the district administration/police/paramilitary forces on duty, first responders of the district, people on emergency and on important engagements, students/ faculties on scheduled duty, people attending wedding, festivals and funerals, and vehicles belonging to government officials, HODs/ AHODs and departmental buses, were exempted from the purview of the call.
Talking to Eastern Mirror, AYO president Medo Yhokha informed that the day’s programme was successfully and peacefully held in all parts of Kohima district. Yhokha, on behalf of AYO, has thanked all concerned and the general public for extending their support to the call of AYO, while he also tendered his regret for the inconveniences to the travellers and commuters.
He expressed hope that the day’s initiative will go a long way in creating awareness among the general public for protecting the Mother Earth, and further to contribute our share towards global warming and its impact.
