Careers in pisciculture offer Nagaland students opportunities in fish farming, research, business and government service.
DIMAPUR — For many students in Nagaland, a career connected with fish may first bring to mind a village pond, a hatchery, or a fish stall in Dimapur. Pisciculture, however, is a field that can involve biology, farm management, animal health, engineering, business, food processing, research, government service, and entrepreneurship.
It is also tied to an industry that has grown rapidly in India. The country produced a record 197.75 lakh tonnes of fish in 2024-25, more than double the 95.79 lakh tonnes produced in 2013-14. India is now the second-largest fish-producing country, accounting for about 8 per cent of global production. Inland fisheries and aquaculture, which are especially relevant to a landlocked state such as Nagaland, produced 151.60 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, up from 61.36 lakh tonnes a decade earlier.
Nagaland is participating in this growth, though on a much smaller scale. The state produced 11,692.88 metric tonnes of fish in 2025–26, according to figures from the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department reported in April 2026. A year earlier, production was 11,158.9 metric tonnes. Large areas considered suitable for ponds and paddy-cum-fish farming are still unused. For a young person choosing a career, that gap matters. It represents work that has not yet been done.
What pisciculture actually means
Pisciculture is another name for fish farming. It means breeding, raising, feeding, caring for, and harvesting fish under managed conditions.
A fish farm can also take several forms. The familiar version is an earthen pond, but fish can be raised in tanks, cages, raceways, recirculating aquaculture systems, and biofloc systems. Fish may also be combined with agriculture. Nagaland already has thousands of hectares under paddy-cum-fish culture, in which rice cultivation and fish production use the same farming area. Recent work at ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education also includes technologies related to biofloc culture, sensor-based aeration and other controlled aquaculture systems.
This means a career in pisciculture does not require every person to become the owner of a large pond. The sector needs people who produce fish seed, manufacture or sell feed, test water, diagnose disease, operate hatcheries, manage farms, design aquaculture systems, transport live fish, make value-added fish products, conduct research, advise farmers, sell equipment, and market the harvest. The Union government's 2026 fisheries data also show public investment extending beyond farms into transport, cold storage, retailing, processing and market infrastructure.
Why this career matters in India
According to Union government fisheries data, production rose from 147.25 lakh tonnes in 2020-21 to 197.75 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. A separate 2026 government review puts average aquaculture productivity at 4.77 tonnes per hectare. Fisheries account for about 7.43 per cent of agricultural Gross Value Added, according to the Department of Fisheries.
The inland numbers are particularly relevant to Nagaland. India's inland fisheries and aquaculture output reached 151.60 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, roughly 77 per cent of the country's total fish production that year. Inland output had been only 61.36 lakh tonnes in 2013-14.
Government spending reflects that expansion. The Union Budget for 2026-27 provided INR 2,761.80 crore for the fisheries sector, including INR 2,500 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Government programmes have supported ponds, hatcheries, cages, fish transport, cold chains, retail outlets, recirculating systems and biofloc units.
These statistics do not mean that every fish farmer will make money. They do show that pisciculture is no longer a small side activity at the national level. It has developed into a chain of businesses and occupations stretching from breeding and feed production to harvesting, refrigeration, transport, processing and retail. The government says fisheries support nearly three crore livelihoods in India, while programmes implemented since 2014-15 have generated millions of direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Choosing fisheries does not lock a person into one occupation. A science student could become a fisheries officer or researcher. Someone interested in business could run a hatchery, grow-out farm, feed unit, fish shop or transport service. A person interested in technology could work with water-quality instruments, automatic feeders, aeration, sensors or controlled production systems.
The Nagaland opportunity
Nagaland's latest available figures make the case more immediate. Fish production increased from 11,158.9 metric tonnes in 2024-25 to 11,692.88 metric tonnes in 2025-26. The area recorded under fishery activities rose from 11,568.8 hectares to 11,755 hectares. Production from ponds and tanks alone reached 9,925.2 metric tonnes in 2025–26, making conventional freshwater pond farming the main source of the state's output.
The unused resource base is perhaps more interesting for students considering future enterprises. The state's fisheries assessment identifies about 30,000 hectares of potential pond and tank area. Only 4,595 hectares were being used in 2025-26. For integrated paddy-cum-fish culture, the estimated potential is 82,500 hectares, against just 3,792 hectares under use. In other words, tens of thousands of hectares identified as suitable have not yet entered production.
Paddy-cum-fish culture deserves special attention in a state where land holdings may not always make a separate commercial pond practical. Instead of treating rice and fish as two entirely separate enterprises, a properly designed field can produce both. It does require suitable bunds, water management, refuge areas for fish, correct stocking, and care over pesticide use. Nagaland's Fisheries department has been promoting integrated farming and composite fish culture through district training programmes.
There is also growing infrastructure around production. In October 2025, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for Nagaland's first Integrated Aqua Park at Tzudikong in the Mokokchung district. The state government says its focus will include fish production, fish seed, inputs and market connections, with educated unemployed young people among those it hopes to serve.
What fish farming work actually involves
A pond may look simple from the roadside. Managing one for reliable production is not.
Before stocking fish, a farmer must ask whether the site has dependable water, what kind of soil it has, whether water can enter and leave safely, whether flooding is a threat, whether fish seed and feed can reach the farm, and whether harvested fish can reach buyers quickly.
The next task is pond preparation. A farmer has to manage unwanted fish and weeds, repair embankments, prepare the pond bottom where necessary, check water condition and stock healthy fingerlings at a suitable density. Water quality cannot be judged simply by whether the pond looks clean. Oxygen, pH, temperature and other conditions affect feeding, growth, disease and survival. Local soil conditions matter too.
Species selection is another business decision. Composite fish culture places compatible species with different feeding habits in the same pond so that food and space can be used more efficiently. Nagaland's programmes have worked with carps including rohu, mrigal, grass carp, silver carp and common carp, while the state also has work connected with mahseer and trout. The appropriate choice depends on location, temperature, seed availability and the intended market.
Then come the daily jobs: feeding, watching fish behaviour, checking water, maintaining inlets and outlets, keeping predators away, looking for signs of disease, recording costs and growth, and preparing for harvest. Once fish leave the water, handling becomes a food-quality issue. Ice, clean containers, fast transport and access to buyers can affect how much of the selling price reaches the producer. National fisheries policy therefore treats transport, cold storage, retail markets and processing as part of the same production chain.
Technology can increase production, but it can also increase risk. Biofloc and recirculating aquaculture systems can produce fish in relatively controlled spaces, yet they require equipment, electricity, water monitoring and technical knowledge.
What to study and where it can lead
For students who want fisheries as a professional career, the main undergraduate degree is the Bachelor of Fisheries Science, or B.F.Sc. It is a four-year professional programme covering subjects such as aquaculture, fish biology, aquatic animal health, fisheries resources, feed and nutrition, breeding, extension, processing and farm management.
One of the most relevant institutions for a Nagaland student is the College of Fisheries at Lembucherra, Tripura, under the Central Agricultural University, Imphal. It offers a four-year B.F.Sc. and two-year M.F.Sc. programmes in fields including aquaculture, aquatic animal health, fisheries extension, fish genetics and breeding, biotechnology, processing technology and fisheries resource management. CAU's jurisdiction includes Nagaland.
CAU currently lists three undergraduate admission routes: state nomination, ICAR CUET and self-financed seats. Another nearby option is Assam Agricultural University's College of Fisheries at Raha, which offers the B.F.Sc. over eight semesters and also offers postgraduate fisheries study. Students interested in research after their bachelor's degree can consider institutions such as ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education in Mumbai, which offers postgraduate and doctoral education and is also engaged in aquaculture technology and training.
After graduation, the paths separate. A B.F.Sc. graduate can look at state and central fisheries departments when recruitment is announced, hatcheries, commercial aquaculture farms, feed companies, seafood and processing firms, laboratories, development projects, banks and insurance-related fisheries work, extension organisations and entrepreneurship. Higher study can lead toward fish health, aquaculture research, genetics, nutrition, biotechnology, economics, processing, teaching and scientific work. Exact government posts, qualifications and pay depend on the recruitment rules in force when a vacancy is advertised.
A degree is not the only route to earning from fish. A student from a farming family may choose short technical training and begin with an existing pond. Others may enter seed rearing, feed supply, fish transport, retailing, equipment, ice and cold handling, or farmer collectives. The skill requirement changes with the job, but biological knowledge and record-keeping help even in small enterprises.
Money, government schemes and starting sensibly
Pisciculture can generate income, but there is no honest fixed figure that can be given for what a fish farmer will earn. Revenue depends on pond size, production per hectare, survival rate, stocking cost, feed expenditure, labour, water, disease, harvesting, transport and selling price. A farm with high production can still struggle if feed costs are excessive or the fish cannot reach a good market at the right time.
Students should therefore think of a fish farm as a business before thinking of it as a pond. A simple plan should answer five questions: what fish will be produced, where the seed will come from, how much feed and other inputs will cost, when the fish can be harvested, and who will buy it. Beginning with a manageable unit provides room to learn water management, feeding and marketing before taking on a larger loan.
Government support can reduce some entry barriers. As of August 2026, the Union government lists PMMSY for 2020-21 to 2026-27, along with the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana, or PM-MKSSY, for 2023-24 to 2026-27. The Kisan Credit Card facility is also available to eligible fisheries participants for working-capital requirements. Actual eligibility and assistance depend on the scheme component, beneficiary category and approval process, so applicants should verify the current rules with their district fisheries office and lending bank before spending money.
PM-MKSSY has an outlay of INR 6,000 crore and operates through the National Fisheries Digital Platform. By August 2026, the government reported 35.85 lakh fishers, fish farmers, vendors and other fisheries participants registered on the platform. It is being used to connect participants with services including institutional credit, insurance, training and other scheme-related support.
None of these schemes removes the biological risk of farming. Fish can die from poor oxygen levels, disease, contaminated water or bad handling. Floods can damage ponds. Feed can become expensive. A farmer may produce a good crop and still receive a weak price. Technical knowledge, insurance where suitable, reliable seed, accurate accounts and a buyer plan are therefore as necessary as access to finance.
For a school student in Nagaland, the first step can be much smaller. Visit a working fish farm. Speak to the District Fisheries Officer. Observe how fingerlings are handled. Learn why pH and oxygen matter. Ask a farmer to show a feed bill and harvest record. Students with a serious interest can then consider science at the higher-secondary level and investigate B.F.Sc. admission routes. Those with family ponds can attend a government or ICAR training programme before investing.
The most persuasive argument for pisciculture in Nagaland is not that it promises easy money. It does not. The stronger argument is that the state already consumes and produces fish, its production is rising, its own fisheries assessment shows large areas of suitable land still outside aquaculture, new infrastructure is being built, and scientific training is reaching districts across the state.
The field has space for farmers, technicians, scientists, public servants and young business owners.
