Dimapur, June 18: Khatkhati police caught eight persons for attempting to rob a truck carrying tea at the Khatkhati check gate near Rains Inn Hotel on June 17 morning.
The officer in-charge of Khatkhati police station, Haokam Changsan informed
Eastern Mirror that the truck started from Jorhat on June 14 and was bound for Kolkata.
According to the officer, the owner of the truck had tried to contact the driver on June 15 but his phone was switched off. He then proceeded to track the GPS fitted in the truck and found that it was headed towards Khatkathi.
“The owner informed us on June 16 and at around 3 am on June 17, we caught the driver and handymen heading towards Dimapur,” he said.
Following interrogations, six other people involved in robbing the truck were also arrested from Sunday market in the Assam-Nagaland border near Burma Camp, Dimapur.
The truck was carrying tea worth INR 36 lakh, according to the police officer.
The arrested persons were identified as Biki Deb, aged 39; Swarup Sahani, aged 49; Subodh Yadav, aged 37; Kivi Kiho, aged 29; Suman Chetry, aged 25; Tilok Biswakarma, aged 30; Gilber Pao, aged 36; and Rana Choudhury, aged 35. They have been kept in police remand for two days.
According to the officer, crossing the Assam-Nagaland border takes only 10-15 minutes and committing a crime becomes easy since tracing the criminals in another state involves a ‘long process.’
