IMPHAL, December 3
About 700 Imphal-bound goods-laden trucks were stranded on Thursday along two highways connecting Manipur due to duel indefinite economic blockade imposed by Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) and Sadar Hills based civil societies pressing for their seperate demands.
Sources informed Newmai News Network about 600 goods-laden trucks were stranded in Leingangpokpi area of Imphal-Jiribam road (National Highway 37) while another 100 on different sections of Imphal-Dimapur road (NH-2) which is also known as Trans Asian Highway No.1.
They said nearly 89 Imphal-bound loaded trucks were stranded at different points, including 37 in Kangpokpi area, along Imphal-Dimapur road section of Senapati district.
Different organisations in Sadar Hills under Senapati have called the economic blockade expressing strong displeasure against the Manipur government for allegedly neglecting their demand for repairing the deplorable highway section.
Obstruction given to the only two lifelines of the land-locked state is likely to cause shortage of essential commodities including fuel besides causing price rise in the coming days if the Manipur government continues to ignore the issues., according to sources.
Official sources, meanwhile, said the government has taken steps to escort back the stranded vehicles.
The student union of Mission Blind School, Heikakpokpi has also announced to impose an indefinite bandh along Imphal-Moreh road from December 16 midnight, which will continue till December 21 to protest against the state government for failing to fulfill the demand for upgradation of the school to a full-fledged institute.
Mission Blind School Students’ Union informed this through a press note today.
