The South African polo team emerged as the champion of the 6th Women’s International Polo Tournament by defeating host Manipur team A (7-4) at the Mapal Kangjeibung in Imphal on Monday.
In the final match of the week-long women’s polo tournament, the South African team dominated the match with accurate ball carrying talent right from the first chukker of the exciting match.
Manipur polo players tried their best to equalise the score margins in the 3rd and 4th chukkers of the match but they couldn’t make it as the foreign team players scored most of their scores in the first and second chukkers.
Manipur’s Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister, Letpao Haokip and Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo along with the president of All Manipur Polo Association (AMPA) Dr. K Saratchandra were present during the closing function cum final match of the tournament which was organised by AMPA with the support of the Directorate of Tourism Government of Manipur.
The tournament which started from February 15 was participated by five teams -- South Africa, Luxembourg, India (IPA), India (Manipur-A) and India (Manipur-B).
It may be mentioned that Manipur-A team defeated Manipur-B team 13-2 in a crucial league encounter on Sunday to seal a place in the final before South Africa completed the league campaign sweep with an 11-1 demolition of Luxembourg.
