The prestigious 6th Silver Cup T-20 Cricket Tournament organized by Nepali Baptist Church Kohima Youth Department (NBCK YD) under the theme “Peace and Unity through Cricket” commenced today with Congress MLA Imtikumzuk gracing the inaugural function as the chief guest here at the Local Ground (Khouciezhie).
Altogether 26 teams from Nagaland and Assam are participating the prestigious cricket tourney in the State. Out of the 26 teams, four is from Dimapur, two from Wokha, one from Diphu, Karbi Anglong (Assam) and 19 from Kohima.
Meanwhile, playing the inaugural match defending champions Blue Start, Dimapur humiliated Skylark Kohima by 213 runs.Skylark won the toss and elected to field but Blue Star batsmen were too strong to score a total of 244 runs losing 3 wickets with Imtiwati contributing highest 73 runs, Michael 67 runs and Gaurav 49 runs. Skylark bowlers Sengulie and Athozo claimed one rival wickets each. Chasing the huge target, Skylark were bundled scoring 30 runs in 10.1 overs. Blue Star bowler Michael claimed four wickets while Amit and Bashir took one each. Michael was awarded the man of the match.
In the second match, visiting team from Karbi Anglong Assam – Diphu XI knocked Simple Set Kohima by 122 runs. Winning the toss, Diphu-XI elected to bat and set a target of 159 runs in 20 overs losing 5 wickets in 20 overs. Rahul contributed highest 53 runs, Himari and Jitu scored 32 and 28 respectively. Simple Set bowlers Rencho and Ringo took two wickets each.
Chasing the target, Simple Set were knocked out in 10.4 overs at 37 runs while Diphu-XI bowlers Mridul and Pansam claime three wickets each. Rahul Ranghana of Diphu XI was adjudged man of the match.
Addressing the gathering MLA Imtikumzuk said that sports and sporting activities form a very important part of any society, for people of all ages, for fitness and health. It is also a great opportunity for bringing people together and fostering unity and harmony among various groups of people, he said.
Dwelling on the theme of the tournament, he said “in today’s world and society where there is conflict and unrest everywhere, such well-meaning initiatives of young people to come together and celebrate their talents, while at the same time build better friendship and understanding is very encouraging and healthy”.
He also lauded the youth department of NBC Kohima for being actively involved in sports activities and taking it to higher level of organizing sports with a purpose, by using the proceeds for noble and humanitarian cause.
“In this age of moral decadence and hopelessness, young people should be strongly rooted in faith and spiritual values to bring about positive change in the society,” he said.
