A total 698 cases were disposed and settlement amount of Rs 1,10,28,557.45 (One crore ten lakhs twenty eight thousand five hundred fifty seven and forty five paise) was realized during the National Lok Adalat, which was successfully conducted in all the districts of Nagaland on December 12.
Presiding judges and two conciliators sat in each districts. Panel lawyers and para legal volunteers assisted the litigants who came to get relieve.
In some districts, legal awareness on the topic of Lok Adalat along with Lok Adalat sittings were held where the panel lawyers apprised the masses to avail the facilities
As part of the National Lok Adalat, Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) organized a programme on December 12 in District Court Building, Kohima.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Mrs Mezivolu T Therieh, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary KDLSA, where she appreciated the banks and the beneficiaries for coming forward to settle their cases. She said the institution of Lok Adalat or people’s court is the forum for settlement of disputes.
She said at Lok Adalat, disputes or cases pending in the court of law or a pre-litigation stage are settled or compromised amicably and expeditiously without any cost and added that the burden of waiting for years on matter or dispute to reach a settlement is avoided. She further encouraged the bank officials to assist the legal service authority by disseminating information to the beneficiaries.
The conciliators for the Lok Adalat included panel lawyers namely Alex Akhoto Chasie, Ms Wapangienla Kichu, Ms D Chadi and Temsu Walling and para legal volunteers were Rukushil, Ms Zhokhovelu, N Zeliang and Ms Vilazonuo from Kohima District Legal Services Authority.
In the National Lok Adalat, altogether 389 bank loan cases were put up for settlement out of which 30 cases were disposed. Banks which participated in the programme were SBI Main Branch, SBI Bazaar Branch, Central Bank of India, Cooperative Bank, United Bank of India, and the Bank of Baroda.
The outstanding amount of 30 cases was Rs 15,90,635 and the total settled amount was Rs 10,39877.
In a related programme, Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDSLA) held an annual Lok Adalat in the District Court where several cases were heard and settled different contending parties.
Altogether, seven cases relating to Bank loan recovery and one Motor Accident Claim (MAC) were settled. MDLSA convinced the contending parties to come to a settlement where the defendants agreed to pay a price of more than 10 lakhs to the plaintiffs.
MDLSA comprising seven advocates is headed by District & Session Judge, N Syuie NJS as the chairman, and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chinemchiba as the secretary.
In 2015, MDSLA conducted twelve seminars relating to legal awareness and services. The authority also conducted three Lok Adalats, the latest being the December 12 Lok Adalat at the District Court. The MDLSA has also been observing different occasions like Senior Citizens’ Day, World AIDS Day, World Disabled Day, National Legal Services Day Etc.
