KOHIMA, JULY 23
The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) Nagaland branch on Wednesday joined its parent body in observing the organization’s 65th foundation day at FPAI Nagaland office near NSF Martyr’s Park, Kohima. Commemorating the occasion, the organization honoured its founder president, Padma Bhushan Lady Dhanwand Rama Rau and also launched a ‘Year of Volunteerism’ seeking to inspire young volunteers towards two key causes –Comprehensive Sexuality Education and Reproductive Health Services.
Delivering the keynote address, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima senior MO Dr. Pewezo Khalo underscored the nobility of volunteerism. He said that volunteers work for a noble cause without expecting anything in return, however, he pointed that lack of motivation and proper guidance are proving to be the greatest drawbacks for volunteerism in the current context. He expressed concern that many youth today are moving towards negative lifestyle and stereotype and are becoming less concerned with doing any voluntary work in their community.
Each person is unique and that uniqueness has to be explored and utilized to make positive changes around him/her, Dr. Khalo stated. He said that volunteerism cannot be imposed on a person but can be influenced with a sense of responsibility.
Touching upon the qualities required of a good volunteer, he emphasized that flexibility, energy, creativity, integrity and selflessness are very important. He also highlighted that parents, educators and community leaders need to provide proper information and encourage volunteerism amongst the youth.
Also, expressing concern that many people have misconceptions about the FPAI, linking ‘family planning’ to abortions, Dr. Khalo underscored that this needs to be corrected. He called upon the young people who are volunteering for the organization to spread and propagate awareness so that the true message and proper information is given out to the people.
FPAI central executive committee member, Sarah Nuh shared briefly about the FPAI and said the organization has been a model of philanthropic work as the leading NGO in India working in the field of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), aiding millions across the country with its services. She informed that the association also empowers thousands of youth each year in and out of the formal education system to make informed life choices through its Adolescent Education Program Plus (AEP+).
“The vast gamut of possibilities and opportunities to serve our people can be unleashed by active support through volunteership and we look forward to your continued cooperation as FPAI endeavours to stride ahead in the service of the poor and marginalized,” she stated.
FPAI Nagaland president, James Liezietsu and FPAI Nagaland M&E officer, Caroline also spoke on the occasion. The programme was chaired by FPAI Nagaland branch manager, Vincent Belho. The programme was attended by young people from assorted backgrounds including students, teachers, graduates, etc.
