DIMAPUR — Sixty railway stations across the Northeast, including one in Nagaland, are being redeveloped under the Ministry of Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), according to a press release issued by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Monday.
The release stated that the scheme envisages comprehensive development of railway stations through a long-term, phased approach, with detailed master plans prepared for each selected station and implemented systematically to enhance passenger amenities and infrastructure.
Across the NFR zone, a total of 92 stations have been identified for redevelopment, of which 60 stations in the Northeast are being taken up. These include 50 stations in Assam, four in Tripura and one each in Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland.
The redevelopment focuses on improving station access and circulating areas, upgrading waiting halls and toilets, installing lifts and escalators where required, enhancing cleanliness and providing free Wi-Fi facilities. Modern passenger information systems, executive lounges, designated spaces for business meetings, landscaping and improved station façades are also part of the project. The scheme also promotes local entrepreneurship through “One Station One Product” kiosks to create economic opportunities for local communities.
According to the NFR, Haibargaon railway station became the first completed Amrit Bharat station in Assam and was inaugurated in May 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The redeveloped station incorporates modern facilities along with elements of Assamese culture and heritage and includes Divyangjan-friendly infrastructure.
Progress has also been recorded in several other stations in Assam. Under the Alipurduar Division, Fakiragram has achieved 88 per cent physical progress, Kokrajhar 78 per cent, Dhubri 80 per cent and Gauripur 82 per cent. Under the Rangiya Division, Majbat railway station has reached 98 per cent completion and Viswanath Chariali 97 per cent. In Meghalaya, Mendipathar station under the Rangiya Division has achieved 73 per cent progress.
The NFR stated that the upgraded stations are expected to generate employment and business opportunities, improve ease of travel and emerge as centres of socio-economic activity in surrounding areas through improved connectivity, modern amenities and preservation of regional identity.
