DIMAPUR — Warning of a looming healthcare risks in one of Nagaland’s most remote regions, the Pungro Town Students’ Union (PTSU) has demanded the immediate posting of a reliever at Community Health Centre Pungro following the transfer of a medical officer.
In a petition submitted to the Health department, the union sought urgent intervention for the posting of a reliever in place of the medical officer at CHC Pungro, who was transferred vide an order dated February 18.
According to the PTSU, CHC Pungro is the only community health centre in the entire Pungro sub-division, catering to as many as 56 villages and serving largely marginalised and remote populations who depend solely on the facility for medical care.

Highlighting an existing shortage of doctors, the union pointed out that civil society organisations and local stakeholders have repeatedly sought the appointment of additional medical personnel in the area.
“In such a situation, transferring a medical officer without immediately posting a reliever is deeply concerning and will severely impact healthcare delivery,” the union stated.
It cautioned that inadequate medical staffing places the lives and well-being of residents at serious risk, stressing that access to healthcare is a fundamental right irrespective of location.
Urging the department to act without delay, the union appealed for the immediate posting of a reliever in the larger interest of public health and welfare in Pungro and the surrounding villages in Kiphire.
