It is said that the explosion took place when the victims accidentally stepped on an unexploded explosive device believed to be a lethod bomb in the area. Police suspected that the unexploded bomb might have been left there during a crossfire that took place some years back.
In the blast, the young boy died on the spot while his father Aku Pamei, said to be an ex-serviceman, sustained serious injuries to both his legs.
Following the incident, locals and police personnel rushed to the explosion site and evacuated the injured father to a private hospital in Imphal for medical treatment, while the body of the boy has been sent for further formalities.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the explosion and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
