Dimapur, Nov. 11 (EMN): The 34th annual session of Ato Area Sports Association (AASA) began at Toshiho village with 'unity through sports' as the theme on November 11.
An update received here on Monday informed that class-1 contractor Howoto Jakhalu, the chief guest of the inaugural function, unfurled the flag and declared open the 34th GB's Football Trophy; 31st Lt. Nikhekhu and Lt. N Yihoto Zhimo Memorial Men and Women Volleyball Trophy; and 6th Lt. Shekuto Süü Memorial Men and Women Badminton Trophy.
Stating sports is the best profession in the world, Jakhalu outlined the social, economic, health and mental benefits that sports can bring into the community and in the life of an individual, informed the update. He lauded the AASA officials for taking the effort of holding such an event that not only promotes the talent of the young people in the area but also “togetherness among the people”.
Citing the success and achievements of woman boxing icon Mary Kom and “how she rose from nothing to international fame”, Jakhalu asked “why can't Nagas attain fame and glory in the field of sports like the boxing star of Manipur as Nagas are second to none and there is no dearth of talent among the Nagas”. He challenged the youngsters to excel in sports and reminded them that “success comes through hard work only.” He also enthused the gathering on the need for social reformation.
Head GB of the host village, Hovito Zhimo welcomed the dignitaries and participating teams to the event during the programme.
