Dimapur, Nov. 29 (EMN): The narcotic cell of Excise department on November 28 seized 3,430 kg of poppy straw from two trucks at the interstate Excise check-gate at Khuzama in Kohima.
According to a press release from the department on Friday, this was one of the highest quantity of narcotic items seized.
It informed that 1,900 kg of poppy straw were found concealed by sacks of dried fruits inside the first truck. The driver, Narendra Singh (36) was arrested and booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, it informed.
‘At about the same time, the driver of the second ten-wheeler truck parked his vehicle at some distance from the gate and disappeared into the forest by the highway. Upon searching on suspicion, the same duty party recovered 1530 kg of poppy straw concealed below sacks of animal feeds (Wheat Bran),’ it stated.
The consignment was seized and an arrest warrant has been issued against the absconding driver, it informed and added that the total value of the seized items was estimated to be INR 34 lakh.
