Dimapur Aug. 28 (EMN): Three mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters from Nagaland brought laurels to the country by winning medals at the Global Martial Arts Association (GAMMA) Asian MMA Championship 2021 on Saturday.
Kekhrieneitso Angami (70.3 kg) and Longtsukumba Ao (77.1 kg) won silver medals in the lightweight and welterweight divisions respectively, while Arsenba Ozukum (56.7 kg) won bronze in the flyweight category.
Angami conceded defeat to Nurtaza Jumakhanova of Kazhakhstan in the final bout, while Ao lost to Yazan Jaber of Palestine in a close match. Meanwhile, Ozukum was defeated in his semi-final bout to Dinesh Naorem, also from India, on Friday.
Five fighters -- Kekhrieneitso Angami, Longtsukumba Ao, Arsenba Ozukum, Limasunep Imchen and Mairidin Newmai -- from the state had represented India at the championship event held in Kyrgyzstan from August 24 to the 28th.
Imchen, who fought in the bantamweight category, lost to Eldos Uulu Attokur of Kyrgyzstan, and Newmai conceded defeat to Motaz Temeiza of Palestine in the round of 16 in featherweight category.
India stood in the third position of the medal tally at the GAMMA Asian MMA Championship after winning 22 medals, including four gold, seven silver and 11 bronze, while Kazakhstan topped the chart with 36 medals, followed by Kyrgyzstan with 22 medals; Palestine - three medals, and Pakistan- three medals.
