Mokokchung, Feb. 23 (EMN): Defending Champions Sovran beat the new entrant Royal Strikers by three wickets in the inaugural match of the 29th MDCA Interclub Cricket Tournament 2021 at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung on Tuesday.

Electing to bat first, Royal Strikers posted a knock of 119/7 in 20 overs.  Temsuwati’s  51/59 balls and Impochang’s 21/21 balls consolidated Strikers’ score while Temsulong, Alemsashi and Imtinuksung collected two wickets each in the first innings.

Replying to 119/7, the defending champions chased their required target in 19.1 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Imlikaba and Merenchemba produce Sovran’s highest combine score of 66 runs out of 67 balls. The wickets of Sovran were collected by Imliwapang (3), Toshiwapang (2), Bendangakum and Temsuwati picked one each.

Earlier, the tournament was kicked off by ADC Mokokchung Shashank Pratap Singh, who lauded the Mokokchung District Cricket Association (MDCA) for organising the tourney for more than 25 years.

He asserted that cricket or any sports instils the uniting force within the team and among the participating teams. He added that sports bring out the best within oneself to perform better; build team spirit and sportsmanship qualities among the players.

He further urged the players and MDCA officials to strive for excellence rather than regular tournaments. The opening match was witnessed by NCA vice president Herato Sukhalu and MDCA officials.

This year, ten teams are participating in the tournament organised by the Titans Club under the aegis of the Mokokchung District Cricket Association (MDCA).
