Dimapur, Dec. 29: At least 26 shops in Chumukedima daily market were razed to ashes in an inferno that broke out in the wee hours on Thursday, causing damage to property worth Rs 15 lakh. However, there was no report of any casualty.
According to Fire department officials at Chumukedima, the fire occurred at around 3.50 am and it took around one-and-a-half hour to control the blaze from spreading to other areas. Two fire tenders were put into service. Property worth Rs 2.80 crore was saved, they said.
Though the exact cause of the inferno could not be ascertained, the Fire department suspected it to have been caused by some miscreants.
The market belongs to a Naga and was being run by a non-Naga.
