Dimapur, June 9 (EMN): Skylight Team lifted the 4th Phaipijang Pro League on June 8 after defeating defending Champion Ngambom United CF.
Goal keeping heroics by Skylight custodian shattered Ngambom United CF dream of clinching its third title in one of the most thrilling and nail biting final matches in the history of Phaipijang Pro League.
A total of eight goals were scored in the game with both teams playing with full passion and determination.
The game started on a bright note for Skylight when the referee awarded a penalty in favour of Skylight and their top scorer, Ngamkhogin Doungel made no mistake to give his team the lead. Soon enough Ngambom United was 2-0 down when Mangkholen Singsit of Skylight caught the opposition keeper off his line to lift the ball over him and into the back of the net. But against the run of play in the first half injury time Cobminthang Hangsing of Ngambom United reduced the deficit to 1-2 before going into break.
The second half of the game brought the much needed vibe into the match and it was game on when Ngambom United were awarded a penalty which Haotinlen Thomson scored to equalise. The score now tied at 2-2, the defending champions erupted into life and started being a constant threat.
And soon after the equalising goal, Haotinlen came out on top again lifting the ball over the keeper of Skylight and into the back of the net to give Ngambom United CF the 3-2 lead for the first time in the game.
Skylight went in all out for the equaliser but the defending champions held their nerves and defended their lead. The game headed into injury time and the defending champions were within sniffing distance of their third title when Nehminlen ended up at the end of a scuffle inside Ngambom box to slot home the loose ball.
After 70 minutes of normal play the game went into extra time and in the first half of extra time, Thanglenngam Lunkim headed in another fine goal to give his team the lead. Skylight again came back with a goal of their own through Letminlal to take the game into a tie break.
Skylight went on to win the shoot-out 3-0 with their goal keeper making 2 vital saves.
