Imphal, Jan. 30 (EMN): A 24 hour general strike has been called in Manipur to oppose the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill from the midnight of Jan. 30 till the midnight of Jan. 31.
The strike was called under the banner of Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (MPACAB), a newly floated body during a joint emergency meeting of more than 60 civil society organisations operating both in the hills and valley on Monday.
Leaders of well known organisations such as All Manipur United Club Organisation, United Committee Manipur, Kuki Inpi Manipur, Zeliangrong Union (Assam Manipur Nagaland), Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation besides apex bodies of various communities were present among others during Monday’s meeting.
In view of the development, the women folks and local clubs have also started to stage torch rallies in the night to protest the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 including Arapti Awang Leikai in the state. Some more organisations are also planning to organise similar torch rallies in their areas.
Meanwhile widespread public meeting-cum-protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was held at parts of the state including Khurai lamlong, Keishampat, Kwakeithel, Lilong, Moirang area under the aegis of local bodies as per decisions of MPACAB and students bodies on Wednesday.
