KOHIMA — A total of 23,799 ineligible beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) have been removed in Nagaland following a verification drive, the Centre informed.
Out of 3,08,904 beneficiaries verified in the state, 23,799 were found ineligible and deleted, while two were found eligible and retained, reflecting an action rate of 7.70%.
Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya disclosed this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
At the national level, 8.51 crore beneficiaries were flagged for verification across states and Union Territories. Subsequent field-level checks led to the removal of 2.21 crore ineligible beneficiaries, while 2.64 crore were found eligible and retained.

The Centre said multiple parameters were used to identify ineligible beneficiaries, including company directorship data (MCA), income records from CBDT (such as annual income above INR 6 lakh or state-specific thresholds), and Aadhaar-based checks identifying deceased persons, those above 100 years of age, or anomalous cases.
Other indicators included ownership of motor vehicles as per MoRTH records, GST turnover exceeding INR 25 lakh, duplicate entries, and “silent beneficiaries” who had not availed ration for prolonged periods.
On the question of savings in foodgrain allocation and subsidy, the minister said it could not be precisely quantified, as states replace deleted beneficiaries with newly eligible households.
However, the exercise improves targeting and allows inclusion of deserving families, enhancing the efficiency of the system.
The Centre has advised states and Union Territories to carry out re-verification strictly in accordance with their notified inclusion and exclusion criteria.
It emphasised that no beneficiary is removed automatically and that all deletions are carried out only after due verification by the respective state governments.
