Kohima, July 12 (EMN): At least 21 houses including a church and a memorial building were destroyed by a major landslide which occurred early Wednesday morning at Peraciezie colony, near High School area, Kohima.
The massive soil erosion has also displaced around 20 families which have tenants numbering over hundred, informed Khrielakuo Mepfhu-o, chairman of Peraciezie colony panchayat.
Following the major landslide, which is adjacent to the GREF camp at High School, Kohima, the colony is reeling under darkness since the electric poles were also destroyed by the natural calamity.
Talking to Eastern Mirror, the colony members informed that nine (9) houses were fully damaged, while five (5) houses were severely damaged and seven (7) houses partially damaged. Two roads connecting the colony were also taken away by the landslide; sources said adding that there was no casualty.
Joshua Kire Memorial Building belonging to Pesocha Baptist Church Council and Living Word Church, run by one Mengusa-o Tsurho-o, were also among the list of houses which were damaged by the soil erosion.
Colony residents told this reporter that the process of soil erosion started two/three days ago due to the continuous downpour. However, the major landslide occurred at dawn hours on Wednesday, which also created alarm among the colony residents.
Sources further informed that most of the residents, who were in deep slumber, were woken up by the sound created due to the soil erosion. A good number of residents reportedly abandoned their houses during the night itself, while some residents were lucky to get time in evacuating some of their properties, it was informed.
“Since the midnight hours yesterday, the colony residents couldn’t sleep,” said one of the residents.
Meanwhile, the colony residents have extended their gratitude to the deputy commissioner of Kohima, Rajesh Soundararajan for providing immediate relief to the affected households and tenants, while they have also thanked the team members of District Disaster Management Authority for their assistance and support.
The colony leaders and residents had a meeting with the disaster management authority this evening which was also attended by SDO Sadar Moa Tzudir and Zasilhoulie Zumu, chairman of High School Ward No. 1.
