2 Manipur women among 242 in Ahmedabad plane crash

Two young women from Manipur were among the 242 people on board the ill-fated Air India Flight AI171 that crashed on Thursday afternoon.

  • IMPHAL — Two young women from Manipur were among the 242 people on board the ill-fated Air India Flight AI171 that crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon.

  • The two females who were among the 10-member cabin crew team of the Air India Flight have been identified as Nganthoi Sharma Kongbrailatpam and Lamnunthem Singson.

  • Nganthoi (20) from Thoubal Awang Leikai, is the second daughter of Nandeshkumar and Mala. Lamnunthem Singson (26) from Kangpokpi town, is the third daughter of Nemneilhing Singson, with two elder brothers and one younger brother.

  • Nganthoi's family, who learned about the incident through local sources, is still awaiting official confirmation. According to family sources, Nganthoi had messaged her sister before takeoff, having joined the cabin crew in 2023.

  • Manipur Governor condoles

  • Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has condoled the tragic aircraft crash in Ahmedabad, expressing deep sorrow and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.

  • Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh also shared a similar sentiment. In a post on X on Thursday, Singh wrote, “I am deeply shocked and grieved by the tragic Air India flight crash near Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad, this afternoon.

  • The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London, carried 242 people on board.This heartbreaking incident has shaken the entire nation. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families during this unimaginably difficult time.”

  • Laser lights prohibited near airport

  • Meanwhile, the general public in 11 revenue villages under Imphal West District, where Imphal International Airport is located, has been directed to refrain from using laser lights, including pointers and shows, within a 10km radius, as per an official order.

  • The villages are Mongsangei, Sangaiprou, Ningombam, Malom Tuliyaima, Malom Tulihal, Meitram, Langthabal Lep, Ghari, Taobungkhok, Yarou Bamdier and Kodompokpi.

  • The step was taken up based on the Airfield Environment Management Committee meeting of IIA on Wednesday.  “This ban is implemented to prevent visual distractions of pilots and ensure flight safety,” stated Deputy Commissioner Myanglambam Rajkumar Singh of Imphal West district.

  • “Any person/club/organisation, if found not complying to the above ban, shall be subjected to fines and legal actions under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023,the Aircraft Rules 1937 and the Airport Authority  India Ac 1994,” the order added.
