DIMAPUR — The 1st Intra-District U-23 Football Tournament kicked off at the District Sports Council Ground in Zunheboto on Tuesday.
The 5-day tournament is organised by the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) in collaboration with the Zunheboto District Football Association (ZDFA), informed an update from IA Zunheboto.
In the inaugural match of the tournament, Pughoboto thrashed Aghunato 7–0. Toka from Pughoboto scored a hat-trick to lead his team to a convincing victory.
Addressing the gathering during the inaugural programme of the event, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Zunheboto, Dharam Raj, stressed the important role sports play in physical and mental development of the youth, adding that such tournaments also would hone the skills of the young players, which will in turn improve the performance of the district at the state level.

The special guest also encouraged the players to display camaraderie, compassion, and sportsmanship during the tournament.
Raj went on to congratulate the organisers for initiating the tournament, particularly lauding DPDB Deputy Speaker and Chairman S. Toiho Yeptho for promoting sports in the district and expressed hope that the event will attract better participation in future.
Earlier in the programme, Akaho Zhimomi, Vice President of ZDFA, administered the oath-taking for six teams that are participating in the tournament.
The 5-day football event will conclude on March 14.
