DIMAPUR — The Bamsiakilwa Mithun Rearing Society held its first edition of Hebamlo Mithun Festival on January 5 at Bamsiakilwa village, Peren district.
A unique initiative, the festival themes ‘Our mithun, our pride,’ aims to preserve, conserve, and promote Nagaland's state animal, creating history as the first of its kind, an update stated.
The festival was attended by Namik, president of Tening Block Mithun Society as chief guest. In his address, the chief guest highlighted the mithun's importance and its significance in “our socio-cultural and economic life.”
Namik also urged mithun farmers to increase their population and encouraged every household to own at least one mithun.

Pauka, the village chairman, shared the genesis of the mithun society and mentioned that the village has around 300 mithuns.
The declaration of the festival began with ‘battle of horn’ (buipei kaube) with mithun farmers of Bamsiakilwa declaring Bamsiakilwa as Mithun Village.’
The first edition of the festival was celebrated with sponsors from well-wishers.
The program was chaired by Nambang Pame and Bamile Pame was the guest artist of the day.
Earlier, Ahungbe Nriame delivered the welcome note, and the festival concluded with a vote of thanks from Kedirang Pame.
The Bamsiakilwa Mithun Rearing Society extended its heartiest gratitude to ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, for their generous help and support by presenting a young Nagami Mithun bull to the society with the aim to promote genetic improvement and conservation of Nagami Mithun.
