The 12th Pochury Black Day Memorial Cup kicks off at Meluri to honour martyrs and promote Naga unity.
KOHIMA — The 12th edition of the Pochury Black Day Memorial Cup was kicked off at Meluri on Tuesday, with MLA and Advisor for Science and Technology Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu attending the inaugural programme as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Nienu highlighted the longstanding friendship between the Pochury, Chakhesang, and other Naga communities.
He said the observance of Pochury Black Day carried painful memories of atrocities committed across Pochury areas, including Phor, Yisi, and Matikhrü, where village leaders and villagers made immense sacrifices during the Naga freedom struggle.
He recalled atrocities allegedly committed by personnel of the 16th Punjab Regiment, describing them as unacceptable and unforgivable.
At the same time, Nienu reflected on the message of Christianity and urged the people to forgive and leave justice in the hands of God. He said his heart remained with the martyrs and encouraged the participating players to uphold perseverance, discipline, and tolerance.
Solidarity messages were delivered by Vice President of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) Vimeyiekho Vitso and President of Sümi Kiphimi Küqhakulu Hipito Achumi.
Vitso reaffirmed the NSF’s solidarity with the people of Pochury and honoured the sacrifices made in the pursuit of Naga freedom. Achumi said the tournament went beyond sport, serving as a platform to strengthen the bond between the Sümi and Pochury communities and promote greater unity among the Nagas.
The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Games and Sports Secretary of PSU Khunpeng, following which Nienu officially kicked off the tournament.
In the opening match, Shilloi FC defeated Reguri Sporting Club 5-3 in an entertaining encounter. Alüsha scored the tournament’s first hat-trick, while T Sang and Lipok added one goal each for Shilloi FC. Reguri Sporting Club’s goals came from Tayelo, Sehapa, and Kqwitaru.
