
Dimapur, Dec. 22 (EMN): A total of 12 students with disability from various districts of Nagaland were awarded ‘Indus Tower Scholarship’ during an award ceremony and induction programme organised on December 18 at Hotel Japfu in Kohima. The students from Nagaland were part of the 120 students with disabilities selected from the Northeast region.
The Indus Tower Scholarship was initiated by Indus Tower, the erstwhile Bharti Infratel Limited in partnership with Shishu Sarothi as part of its corporate social responsibility programme aimed at transforming the lives of communities by improving their socio-economic conditions.
An update from Nagaland State Disability Forum (NSDF), which is the state partner organisation for Indus Towers Scholarship Programme in Nagaland, stated that an induction session was also conducted for the students to orient them about the methodology of claiming and mode of scholarship disbursement.
Diethono Nakhro, disability rights activist and state commissioner for persons with disabilities, government of Nagaland, was the chief guest of the event. In her brief speech, she encouraged the students to be focused and also shared valuable insights on the initiative with the participants present at the event.
Speaking at the occasion, Rajender Gurung, Circle CEO-NESA Indus Towers said, “Indus Towers believes in taking an active role and responsibility in transforming the lives of communities. To this effect, Indus has adopted a multi-fold approach for CSR, inclusive education being one of the important elements while promoting education programmes. Indus Towers Scholarship Program with Shishu Sarothi offers a ray of hope to those waiting to emerge from the margins of our society and prove their worth in the world.”
It mentioned that the Indus Towers Scholarship Program implemented by Shishu Sarothi was launched in 2016 with the objective of encouraging and supporting students with disability and has since supported 316 students from across the Northeast pursuing higher education since its inception. It also informed that the programme would support 600 students over a period of five years (120 students each year) in the second phase that commenced in April 2020.
The selected students would be provided support towards their educational fees till the completion of their course adding that a few are also being granted additional assistance towards study materials/ assistive devices/ hostel/ conveyance.
