IMPHAL — The officials of the Central Forest Division of the state Forest department and NCC cadets planted around 1000 seedlings at the Langol Reserve Forest on Monday, as part of the 75th Van Mahotsav 2024.

The department is targeting to distribute 10 to 12 lakh seedlings of various tree species as part of the 75th Van Mahotsav 2024 and plant more than 20 lakh seedlings this season (till September second week), according to officials.

A dedicated kiosk has been set up at the department’s Mantripukhri office premises since last week for distribution of free seedlings to the public. The initiative was taken up to spread awareness about the importance of tree plantation.

More than 1 lakh seedlings have been distributed and planted so far, apart from 1.5 lakh seedlings being planted under various schemes, it was informed.

According to the biennial ‘The Forest Survey of India 2021’, the forest resources in eight north-eastern (NE) states including Manipur account for 23.75 percent of the total forest cover of the country. Among the NE states, Manipur recorded the largest loss in forest cover (249sq km).
