MOKOKCHUNG — Three women namely advocate Maongtola Longchar from Sungratsu, Walunila from Chakpa and Moala Pongen from Longjang have confirmed their candidature for the upcoming Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) elections.

This was made known during second phase consultation and sensitisation tour of Watsu Mungdang, an apex organisation of the Ao women, held at Alempang and Penli Wards on May 21. Watsu Mundang has been organising consultation and sensitisation tour to different wards of Mokokchung where women reservation seats are allotted for the upcoming ULB elections.

Advocate Maongtola Longchar has confirmed her candidature from Alempang ward and acknowledged Watsu Mungdang for their tireless quest to implement women reservation in urban local bodies (ULB).

She stated that implementation of 33 percent reservation for women in ULB was not enough but time has come to show to the world that women too can perform if given the right opportunity. Longchar also stated she stands for women empowerment in the upcoming ULB elections.

She added that there are many works that need to be initiated to empower the women. She, however, stated that it does not mean to overshadow men’s authority/ overpower men’s authority but to work hand in hand with the men counterparts in every endeavour.

As a daughter of the soil, she sought inclusive cooperation from the oldest to the youngest for the growth of Mokokchung.

“I believe with collective efforts we can bring the change we long for,” she said.

The intending candidate from Penli ward, Walunila, stated that her intention to contest the ULB election was to deliver transparency and accountability to the people of Mokokchung.

She commented that implementation of 33 percent reservation for women in urban local bodies was a significant achievement in the history of Nagaland. She vowed to deliver a better livelihood to the unemployed youth and take up community development initiation for inclusive participation.

Another intending candidate from Penli ward, Moala Pongen also stressed for collection participation. She pointed out that there are many basic needs such as water, electricity and sanitation that need sincere attention and sought the people’s mandate.

The president of Watsu Mungdang, Arenla Longkumer, informed that the object of the tour was to highlight and sensitise the importance of women representation in the ULB.

“The Watsu Mungdang desires that those intending candidates who are contesting in ULB elections under 33 percent reservation categories should represent the women community in general and the Ao women in particular. The candidates whoever may represent the womenfolk should be upright and should stand for the welfare of the women as a whole,” she asserted.
