Rongmei community in Kohima celebrates ‘Chakaan Gaan Ngai’

KOHIMA — The Rongmei community in Kohima celebrated ‘Chakaan Gaan Ngai’ festival at Rongmei community hall, Naga Bazaar, with the vice chairman of T Khel Kohima village, Kelhousinyü Solo, as the guest of honour.

In his greetings, Solo recounted the association shared between Tsütounuomia Khel (T Khel) and Rongmei community. He informed that the site of the festival would be re-modeled to cater bigger crowd in future.

Patrick Golmei spoke on the significance of ‘Chakaan Gaan Ngai,’ a post-harvest festival which is celebrated for about a week during the forefathers’ era. He, however, stated that after the advent of Christianity, the festival is now celebrated for two days.

He also recounted the close association of the Rongmei community with T Khel of Kohima since 1937 and acknowledged T Khel for the protection given to them.

The welcome address was delivered by Babu Golmei, chairman of Naga Bazaar Rongmei Development Society, while a song was presented by Jianthailiu Kamei and the vote of thanks was delivered by Thangchapu Rongmei, convener of Chakaan Gaan Ngai 2024.

Cultural dances and songs marked the celebration.
