DIMAPUR — The representatives of Naga tribal hohos and student bodies from "Myanmar-occupied Naga Land" in an emergency meeting convened by the Naga Student’s Organisation (NSO) on February 2 resolved to “dismantle any fencing erected within the Naga homeland by any government” among other resolutions.
In a press release issued by the Mayanmar-based student body, which convened the meeting at Naga Cultural Morung in Lahe town to address the withdrawal of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the proposed reconstruction of border fencing, it mentioned that the house resolved that they would collectively commit to preserving the “openness of our Naga homeland, resisting external impositions on our territorial integrity”.
It said that the house resolved to vehemently oppose and protest such actions with unwavering determination and that the Naga people will enjoy unrestricted access to their farmlands, fields, Naga villages, and towns within the Naga homeland.
It affirmed that Naga people will not be subjected to passport or visa requirements within their sovereign territory.
Reminding the government of India to prioritise the significance of maintaining peace and harmony within the Naga homeland, it urged the authorities to consider the delicate balance crucial for regional stability.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the NSO condemned the Government of India’s decision “to fence and bifurcate Naga villages, fields, and farmlands between India and Myanmar”.
In a note, it claimed that the move is “a flagrant violation of Naga sovereignty, tracing back to time immemorial” and that the imaginary border imposed in 1953 by India and Myanmar remains unrecognised and illegal to the Naga people, as well as the global community.
It said that any attempt by the governments in Delhi and Naypyidaw to control the free movement of the Naga people within their homeland will face fierce opposition and robust retaliation.
The NSO also condemned the statements made by Imkong L Imchen and Temjen Imna Along regarding the FMR and maintained that their integrity is questioned and clarification is sought on whether they have compromised Naga rights to curry favour with the BJP government.
“The Nagas under Myanmar-occupied Nagaland call upon all Naga civil societies and leaders, especially those on Indian-occupied Nagaland, to unite and oppose any laws that threaten the rights of the Naga people,” it read.
