NPF’s long-serving president Dr. Shürhozelie to step down, party elections scheduled

KOHIMA — After more than two decades of leadership, the long-serving President of the Naga People's Front (NPF) party, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, is preparing to retire from active politics.

His decision to step down was confirmed during the NPF's traditional Central Executive Council (CEC) meeting at the party's Central Headquarters in Kohima on Friday, where plans for the upcoming party elections were unveiled.

The change in leadership is scheduled to coincide with the party's general convention and 61st Foundation Day to be celebrated on Saturday, October 21, at Capital Cultural Hall, Kohima.

During the CEC meeting, Secretary General of NPF and MLA Achumbemo Kikon, emphasised the party's enduring commitment to finding an acceptable, inclusive, and honourable solution to the Naga political issue. This commitment, he said, was the reason why the party has survived.

He stressed the importance of the party members to recognise and carrying forward the party's valuable legacy. Additionally, he urged party workers not to be swayed by short-sighted propaganda. Furthermore, he emphasised the crucial role of discipline within the party and advised party workers to maintain discipline and contribute to strengthening the party.

Meanwhile, Leishiyo Keishing, MLA in Manipur and treasurer of NPF Manipur State Unit (MSU), acknowledged the leadership of the NPF party led by President Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu.

He delved into the historical origins of the Naga identity and the formation of the Labour Corps, as well as the submission of memorandum to the Simon Commission, underscoring the evolution of Naga history over the years.

Underscoring the NPF's entry into Manipur state and its consistent advocacy for the concerns of the Naga people, Keishing advised the party workers not to cocoon themselves in isolation but focus on expanding the party and fostering its growth to serve the Naga cause better.

Also speaking at the event, working president of the party, Pusazo Luruo, recalled the inception of the NPF on October 21, 1963, under the leadership of A Kevichusa, with a rooster as its symbol.

He urged party workers to uphold the party's principles and objectives, fostering a spirit of forgiveness to address internal differences. He also encouraged them to collaborate wholeheartedly in support of the party leadership.
