NASTEC observes week-long Science carnival

DIMAPUR — As part of the ‘National Science Day’ celebration, the Nagaland Science and Technology Council (NASTEC), an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Nagaland, organised a week-long Science Carnival or the Festival of Science from February 26 to March 3 at the Department of Science and Technology complex in Kohima.

An update from the department stated that the festival began on February 26 on the theme “Science for fitness” with Ape Puro, fitness instructor of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, as the resource person. He explained the importance of nutrition in fitness.

Puro was accompanied by Medoletuo Chilie, trainer of Life Fitness Gym.

The second day on the theme “Women in Science” was attended by the students of Little Flower Higher Secondary School with Dr. Nesatalu Hiese, Scientist ‘D,’ as the resource person.

The speaker emphasised on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and highlighted the achievements of women in science.

The participants visited the sanitary napkin production unit and were given hands-on training in the art of sanitary napkin production.

The programme on February 28 was attended by students of twelve schools in Kohima to celebrate the ‘National Science Day.’

It stated that Zeneikhonuo Vimero, ex-officio director of Science and Technology department, encouraged the young minds to take interest and pursue a career in the field of science and technology, while Kelhousenuo of Mewi School highlighted the history and the significance of National Science Day.

It stated that a quiz competition on Science was also conducted for the participating schools in which Mewi School emerged as the winner, while Minister Hill Higher Secondary School and Baptist High secured the second and third positions respectively.

The programme on February 29 was conducted on the theme “Basic Science” with Kekuneil Ltu, Scientist ‘B,’ as the resource person, while the programme on March I was held on the theme “New and emerging technologies including AI/ machine learning” with Onongoto Soleho, chief mentor of Innovation Hub and Space Education Centre, as the resource person.

The event on March 2 was held on the theme “Science with fun” with Anjo Phom, educator of Science from Mt. Sinai Higher Secondary School, as the resource person.

The final day of the Science Carnival on the theme “Mission LiFE” witnessed a mix attendance of varying ages consisting of school and college students, parents, science enthusiasts and the general public.

It stated that team members from Nagaland State Climate Change Cell briefed the participants about National Science Day and its importance, introduction to Mission LiFE and the concept of ‘waste to wealth.’ The participants were also administered the Mission LiFE pledge.

Report stated that a total of 250 students from 15 schools participated in the week-long Science Carnival, which was supported by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
