Imphal, August 2 (EMN): In an effort to figure out a permanent solution to the frequent floods in Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been urged to review the Loktak multipurpose project and Ithai barrage in the state. Chief Minister N B Singh after meeting Prime Minister Modi in Guwahati on Tuesday said he urged the Prime Minister to review the Loktak project for permanent solution of frequent floods in the State.
Ithai barrage which has become the main cause of flood in the State should be removed and natural water course should be maintained, Chief Minister told media person when contacted. Loktak multipurpose project was taken up in 1983 to provide regulated storage for power generation to generate 105 MW of power supply and lift irrigation. The main component of the project include Ithai barrage (35ft high dam) across Manipur river with three spillways bays.
Highlighting that the Loktak project was taken up so that the State could get some power supply out of it, he mentioned that at present the State is having sufficient power resources from other sources.
The Prime Minister also held detailed review meetings on the situation in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. Chief Ministers of the respective states, and senior officials were present at the meetings. Manipur Chief Secretary RR Rashmi, Secretary to Chief Minister N Ashokumar, Principal Secretary (Relief and disaster management) MH Khan represented Manipur in the meeting.
