KOHIMA — Governor of Nagaland La. Ganesan on Friday called for efforts to build a society that embraces diversity, fosters dialogue and work towards the betterment of all.
The governor was addressing the commemoration of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Jayanti at Raj Bhavan, Kohima.
While celebrating the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Vaypayee, Ganesan appealed to the people to reflect on the values that he stood for - integrity, perseverance and a deep commitment to the welfare of the nation.
“His (Vajpayee) leadership exemplified humility, kindness and a genuine concern for all citizens, regardless of their background or belief,” he said.
Paying respect and tribute to one of the most iconic and revered leaders of independent India, the governor said Vaypayee left an unforgettable mark on the political landscape of the country.
“Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister of India was a visionary statesman and an eloquent orator whose impact on the nation was profound and enduring,” Ganesan said.
Terming Vajpayee’s journey as one marked by unwavering dedication to the service of the nation, he said and Vajpayee began his career as a journalist and later emerged as a prominent leader in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He ascended the ranks and served three terms as the Prime Minister and under his leadership, the country witnessed significant strides in economic reforms, infrastructure development and nuclear programme, the governor said.
He also accredited the crucial role played by Vajpayee in fostering India’s foreign relations and addressing issues of national importance with the finest diplomacy and conviction.
“It was under his leadership that India conducted successful nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998, showcasing India’s capability as a nuclear power. This pivotal moment in India’s history demonstrated his unwavering commitment of safeguarding India’s national security,” he said.
The governor further reiterated that Vajpayee was a visionary leader who understood the importance of inclusive governance and worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between different ideologies and communities.
Earlier, Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, recounted how the former Prime Minister had come to Nagaland and announced development of road, infrastructure and youth empowerment which, he said, “was historic.”
Metha also appreciated the governor for organising the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Jayanti on December 22 instead of on December 25, which coincides with the Christians’ most celebrated festival Christmas. He said the preponement showed the governor’s understanding of the sensitivity, pulse and the sentiments of the Naga people.
He also recalled the idea of installing the former Prime Minister’s portrait at the Raj Bhavan for which the Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA) was roped in, to honour the legacy of the leader who had done so much for the state of Nagaland.
Secretary to the Governor, Rajesh Soundararajan, presented the portrait of the former Prime Minister, which was painted by local artist Vineizoto Tase, The governor also felicitated Tase for the artwork.
