DIMAPUR — A team of NHIDCL along with District Administration officials and members of civil societies have begun dismantling the decade-old Mon-Namtola Bridge between Mon and Charaideo district of Assam, to make way for a new Bailey Bridge.
The dismantling work began on February 1, just days after the deputy commissioner of Mon issued a travel advisory restricting vehicular movement and directing commuters to take the alternate route via Namtola Charali (Assam)-Lahdoigarh-Jaboka-Pentom Junction (Tizit/Mon).
It said the installation of the new Bailey Bridge is expected to be completed in four months, tentatively by May 31, 2024.
An update received here on Saturday informed that the project was taken after consultation with the legislators of Mon district, NHIDCL team, Technical departments, civil societies and other stakeholders in view of the dilapidated condition of existing bridge and frequent accidents at the site.
Accordingly, an NHIDCL team in co-ordination with the Garden Reach Shipbuilders Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), Kolkata, finalised the project for installation of a new Bailey Bridge.
The update also informed that the NHIDCL is currently undertaking special maintenance and repair work of the existing Mon-Namtola road, which is the lifeline for Mon district. The road and the bridge, which were earlier under the PWD (NH), were said to have been handed over to NHIDCL on special recommendation of Health minister P. Paiwang Konyak, for maintenance and repair work, which is scheduled to be completed by March this year.
