Garbage dumping persists along Dimapur’s NH-36 stretch near Dimapur Government College despite CCTV surveillance, repeated cleanups and public warnings
DIMAPUR — Even after installation of four CCTV cameras to curb roadside garbage dumping, waste continues to accumulate along the NH-36 stretch leading to Dimapur Government College (DGC), according to those maintaining the area.
With concern growing over piling garbage along the stretch, the Alumni Association of Dimapur Government College has been cleaning and maintaining the roadside in association with the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and Earth Alliance.
However, despite repeated clean-up efforts, the area continues to be used for dumping waste.
Fed up with the continued dumping and what they described as a lack of civic sense, the alumni association, in association with DMC and Earth Alliance, installed four CCTV cameras along the stretch on May 23.
A banner was also put up warning that the area was under 24x7 surveillance and that erring people would be publicly exposed and penalised.

Earth Alliance member Adrian M Mahung said that the CCTV installation has failed to deter offenders.
According to Mahung, the alumni association cleaned the area again on Monday morning, but within hours the stretch was again piled with garbage.
He lamented that surveillance alone had not created deterrence and said the continued dumping reflected a lack of environmental concern and public support.
While urging the public to display civic sense, Mahung said that they would not hold back from exposing offenders.
He also shared that there are plans to elevate parts of the roadside stretch that are sinking and to undertake a plantation drive on June 5 while continuing maintenance of the area.
