SUNGRATSU — Cultural presentations and competition in indigenous items such as loin loom craft, traditional winnowing and bamboo crafts marked the second day of the 87th general conference of the Sungratsu Students’ Union (SSU) on Thursday.
The speaker of the second-day evening programme was S Bendang Aier, who spoke on the topic "Synchronisation of culture (Sobaliba jangyumedem)." The speaker stated that every student must be equally responsible for the uplift of the beautiful culture.
“Culture is not rigid and it keeps on changing from time to time according to the ever changing world, therefore, it is the duty of every global citizen to pace oneself with the day to day changes of our lifestyle,” he said.
The speaker also dwelled on political, economic, social, religious, traditional, language, education cultures where the student community could play a pivotal role in bringing a positive change in the society.
On political culture, he urged the students to bring a change by overcoming malpractices prevailing in the society. He expressed hope that stability would be restored in the society only if the student community comes forward to curb malpractices in politics.
He also urged the students to become self-reliant while stressing on the importance of economic culture which Naga needs to adapt.
M Taka Longchar, chairman of Sungratsu village council, said, “Our culture is on the verge of extinction because we favour alien and sophisticated language instead of speaking our mother tongue which is the first step towards promoting and preserving our culture.”
He said, "It is not a prestigious title or honour when you can speak many languages but cannot speak your mother tongue," and urged the students to speak, learn and write their mother tongue.
