Kohima, Aug.9 (EMN): Along with the rest of the country, the All India Freedom Fighters Successor's Organisation (AIFFSO), Nagaland state unit observed the 79th anniversary of 'Quit India Movement' on Monday in Kohima.
While speaking at a function, its president Zeliezhü Angami said that the day was observed to remember all those who laid down their lives during the Indian independence movement to end the British rule in India.
Kikrovi Sakhrie, vice president of the organisation, also shared how the Quit India Movement was launched under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi in Bombay in 1942 to demand an end to British imperialism in India.
He maintained that throughout the years, the state unit had also been observing the occasion while paying tributes to the martyrs who fought and laid down their lives to attain India's freedom.
However, Sakhrie apprised how members from different districts could not attend the state level event in bigger numbers last year as well as this time, owing to the prevailing situation in the country.
He informed that from next year onwards, they would commemorate the event on August 8 instead of the 9th as per the directive from the AIFFSO.
The few office bearers present on the occasion also listened to a Bible verse before observing a moment of silence and saying a prayer as a mark of honour in memory of those freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.
L Doji Tsingrr, member from the state unit, informed how the government has not been paying attention to their grievances, adding that facilities and benefits entitled for freedom fighters and successors are also being denied.
With the main office (HQ) in New Delhi, AIFFSO,Nagaland state unit was established under the North East Region Freedom Fighters Successor's Organisation in 2015 . The unit held its first consultative meeting and seminar on July 15 in 2016 in Kohima.
