Dimapur, April 17 (EMN): The department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services has notified the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in the state, saying that it was confirmed through RTPCR test by National Institute of High Security Animal Disease, Bhopal from the samples taken from Phek and Kiphire.
The notification came more than 10 days after the directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services informed that cases of unusual death of pigs had been reported in the districts of Mon, Kiphire and Phek.
Following the confirmation of African swine fever, the department has requested the public, pig farmers, pig traders, butchers, village functionaries and colony members to remain vigilant and report any unusual mortality of domestic pigs and feral pigs to the nearest veterinary institute.
The outbreak is notified as per “The Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Disease in Animal Act, 2009”, read the notice issued by the DIPR, adding that ‘a radius of one km from the epicentre of the disease outbreak at Phek and Kiphire is hereby declared infected zone and a radius of 10 km as surveillance zone with immediate effect until further notice’.
