DIMAPUR — The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) commenced its academic orientation programme, STAR (Students Training and Academic Readiness), on Wednesday at its premises in Chümoukedima.
The inaugural day had the presence of Kevichatha Sechü, the vice president of Chakhroma Public Organisation, as the special guest.
According to a NEISSR press release, Sechü emphasised the importance of education for students and encouraged them to seize opportunities, use available resources, and cultivate resourcefulness.
He talked about the importance of respecting and supporting freedom of choice while encouraging students to remain resilient in the face of life's challenges. Sechü highlighted that everything happens for the better.
The vice principal of NEISSR, Fr. Lawrence Khing, guided students in revisiting the institute's vision, mission, and core values for holistic development in his address, while also noting the importance of instilling PJI (peace, justice, and integrity) values.
The programme was moderated by Elizabeth Pojar, assistant professor, and began with an invocation by Dr. Toli H Kiba, assistant professor. It featured a welcome note by Dr. Fr. C P Anto, principal of NEISSR.
Dr. Anto, in his speech, stressed the necessity of changing societal attitudes and perceptions. He highlighted that effective communication is a key component in meeting the needs of society, especially for professional social workers.
Alumni Yomakumba Ao, associate programme manager at Antarang Foundation, a Mumbai-based NGO, served as a resource person at the event and underscored the significance and applicability of social work in a hospital environment. He motivated the students to venture outside, explore, and gain knowledge.
The three-day STAR programme will include insights from resource persons in various fields of social work, it said.
