Dimapur, Oct. 20 (EMN): Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK), Zunheboto, Nagaland University (NU) conducted a one-week skill training programme for rural youth on vermicomposting in its premises from October 14 to the 19th.
The main objective of the programme was to provide the youth a detail account of the process involved in preparation of vermicomposting and vermiculture, an update from Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, senior scientist and head of KVK, stated on Sunday.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, who the course coordinator, requested the farmers to come up with vermicomposting in their villages in order to meet the organic fertiliser requirement for promotion of organic food.
During the technical sessions, Dr. Rakesh explained in detail the importance of vermicomposting in today’s world and its role in crop production. For successful adoption of organic farming, he stated that vermicompost is one of the important components which not only improve soil fertility but also improve soil structure and water holding capacity.
Naropongla, farm manager, demonstrated on the various methodologies to be adopted to become successful in vermicomposting.
During the valedictory session, Wapangtoshi Longkumer, ACT plant protection, suggested the participants to adopt the art of vermicomposting and vermiculture for generating income and to reduce drudgery among the women. He has assured assistance from KVK in every aspect of farming.
Readymade vermicomposting tetra beds were distributed to the participants in order to held them start vermicomposting at the earliest. Altogether, 16 youth participated in the week-long programme.
In another programme, KVK Phek, ICAR-NRCM, conducted a training on vermicomposting for Assam Rifles personnel at Pfutsero on October 18. The training was organised as a part of the capsule on developing habit of gardening as a stress management.
Dr. T Esther Longkumer, ACTO (soil science), KVK Phek, ICAR-NRCM and resource person, briefed on the world soil conditions and the causes of soil degradation. She also briefed on the importance of vermicompost, different types of earthworm, units, steps involve in making vermicompost, its advantages etc.
She further urged the personnel to take up vermicompost technology which is a way to manage the kitchen waste that is being generated every day for improving the fertility status of the soil as well as a component of organic farming.
Vermibed and earthworms were also provided to the COB.
