Workshop on Eld’s deer conservation concludes

IMPHAL, NOVEMBER 26: The 3-day international workshop on Eld’s deer conservation held under the aegis of Manipur Forest department and Wildlife Institute of India (WII) concluded with 26-point recommendation here on Saturday.
Reading out the recommendations of the workshop, Dr Lokho Puni Mao, officer on special duty of the Forest department, said the recommendations include establishment of a second home for Sangai deer following the tenets of genetic management, ensuring active community participation for conservation of Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) and Sangai, ex-situ conservation through captive breeding after proper genetic analysis, ecological restoration of suitable sites etc.
Stating that the workshop was inaugurated at Keibul Lamjao where the national 5 soldiers injured in militant ambush near Manipur border park is located in a manner to give opportunity to local people, he said the workshop which saw participation of more than 100 delegates, including 5 international, 27 national and 78 state delegates, had as many as five technical sessions which focused on various aspects of Eld’s deer conservation.
A total of five detailed country reports were also made by the delegates from India, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam while six delegates gave detailed insights on the subject.
Dr Puni also informed the valedictory function of the workshop which was attended by the state Forest and Environment Minister Irengbam Hemochandra along with WII Director Dr VB Mathur and PCCFs of Manipur and Assam Forest departments.
