Dimapur, Sep. 17: A wild leopard attacked and killed livestock at Purana Bazaar-B Village under Chumoukedima circle in the early hours of Tuesday, according to the Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) and administrator of Chumoukedima, Thejavizo Nakhro.
Nakhro told Eastern Mirror that after Forest department officials were alerted, they could confirm that the predator was a leopard because of the footprints found near the livestock killed.
“The Forest department is on the job of locating the leopard,” said Nakhro and assured that the leopard will not be killed.
The EAC has urged the residents of Purana Bazaar and neighbouring villages to take precautionary measures and avoid movement in the forest areas or fields. Further, he advised to restrict movement of cattle and other livestock around the area to avoid any loss or injuries.
The chairman of the village also informed Eastern Mirror that two goats were found dead early Tuesday morning. He informed that along with the Forest officials, a thorough search was being conducted to capture the animal. Till the filing of this report, the animal was yet to be captured.
It was speculated that the leopard might have strayed from neighbouring Assam, which lies just across Dhansiri River.
