Unity runs mark ‘National Unity Day’ in the state

Kohima/Dimapur, Oct. 31: Combined state level function was held at the Civil Secretariat on October 31 in observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas – National Unity day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel and Rashtriya Sankalp Diwas – National Re-dedication Day in commemoration of the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Undertaking of respective pledges of National Unity Day as well as National Re-Dedication Day marked the solemn occasion. The function was chaired by the Secretary of Home Department, Rovilato Mor.

Kohima: Marking the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, department of youth resources and sports organised ‘run for unity’ in Kohima on October 31.

To commemorate the National Unity Day (Rastriya Ekta Diwas), T John Longkumer, Director General of Police, on flagged off “run for unity” at High School Junction, Kohima, which culminated at the Kohima local ground.

DGP, in his address, said the event was to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was instrumental in keeping India united and also the founding father of Republic of India.

He said observing National Unity Day will provide the opportunity to reaffirm the inherent strength to withstand the threats to the unity, integrity, and security of the nation.

He further mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the tallest statue in Gujarat to the country as part of the celebration.

Rajesh Soundararajan, deputy commissioner, Kohima, said the event is being observed all over the country on October 31 to pay tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 142nd birth anniversary.

Stating that the celebration was to foster and reinforce dedication to preserve and strengthen unity, he called upon the participants to inculcate these values and foster sense of unity and integrity to make the nation stronger.

Around 200 participants from schools, NSS, armed forces, DC staff and YRS department took part in the event.
In the event, Kevide Kikhu bagged the first position in men’s category, while Beisevoto and Mekhriekho were placed in the second third positions respectively. In the women’s category, Reena Rai got the first position, while Lithrila and Mengutunuo won the second and third positions respectively.

Nagaland University: NagalandUniversity, Lumami, celebrated Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) in the university campus on October 31. To mark the occasion, ‘Run for Unity’ was organised starting from the University Health Centre and culminating at the University’s I Ihoshe Kinimi Hall.

In a brief speech before flagging off the run, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, NU vice chancellor, expounded on the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for the unity and integrity of the country, which earned him the title ‘Sardar.’

Following the unity run, the taking of ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Pledge’ was led by Dr. Abemo, NU Registrar, in English and by Prof. Pardeshi Lal, in Hindi. The unity run was attended by teachers, administrative staff and students.

In addition, a debate competition on the topic “Unity in diversity is a myth” was organised. The programme was chaired by Mrs Monalisa Tase, assistant professor, Department of Political Science, while Dr. Radharani Maibam, assistant professor,

Department of Anthropology, and Ms Dipika Paul, assistant professor, Department of Sociology were the judges.
In a lively debate filled with competing views and arguments, the team that stood against the motion emerged as the winners.

In the individual category, Suraj Kumar from the Department of Chemistry was adjudged as the best debater.
Following the debate, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, delivered a brief speech in which he dwelt on the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He explained that whether in personal life or public life, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was portrayed as strong-willed and dedicated to the cause of the nation. A special mention was made of his contribution in bringing the princely states under the Union of India soon after independence.

The programme concluded with remarks from Ms Neizhanuo Golmei, assistant professor, Department of Political Science.

Sainik School: Commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Sainik School Punglwa (SSP) organised ‘Run for unity’ on October 31.

The run was flagged off by the school’s principal, Gp Capt Sharad R Keskar. The motive of the run was to spread the message of ‘Unity in diversity’ and strengthening the integrity towards a better society. The event witnessed participation by all cadets, staff and officers.

Participants ran a distance of 4 kms under the banner ‘Run for unity.’
As part of the event, special assembly was conducted wherein Cdt Kipa Amak delivered a speech on ‘Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.’

Cadets and staff took a pledge of ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ and solemnly resolved to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the nation.

BRTF:Personnel of 15 Border Road task Force (BRTF), located at Peraciezie near High School Junction in Kohima town, conducted various activities on the occasion of ‘Rashtriya Ekta Divas’ including organising run for unity and taking of pledge.
Altogether 81 personnel including four officers, 29 supervisors and 58 pioneers participated in the unity run.

The force has been contributing to the socio-economic development of Nagaland since October 1963, a defence release stated. Be it the remotest area of Longwa or building infrastructure for various agencies, besides the double laning and maintenance of prestigious National Highway No 29 (Then NH 39), 15 BRTF has contributed immensely. It is one of the most decorated BRO Units with 9 Saurya Chakras, the release added.
