Dimapur, April 20 (EMN): A workshop and mass testing programme for HIV/AIDS was carried out by the Tuensang district executive force and a nongovernmental organisation, Kripa foundation, on April 16.
The subdivision police officer of Tuensang Dr. Pritpal Kaur issued a press release on Saturday informing about the event.
‘India has the 3rd highest number of HIV-AIDS cases in the world, Nagaland the 3rd highest in the country and Tuensang the 3rd highest after Dimapur and Kohima. Hence, our fight should also have three times the efforts to combat the disease,’ Kaur stated.
There is a high prevalence of the disease as 187 new cases were reported in just 10 months and many still do not report, the press release explained.
‘90% of its transmission route is unprotected intercourse followed by the mother-child route. Another problem is drugs. Hence, an awakening call is needed for sensitization.’
During the workshop in Tuensang, members of the Kripa Foundation highlighted HIV records and details about treatment, among others.
Kaur also stated at the programme ‘facts and objectives,’ the press release stated. Among the special guests were Brigadier SK Sheoran of the Assam Rifles, Tuensang’s Deputy Commissioner Moh. Ali Shihab, and Police Superintendent Bharat; and community leaders, the updates stated.
‘Prevention is always better than cure. Patients need empathy and compassion and stigma should be done away with. It costs one’s family, career, relations, and life,’ the updates stated as the organisers called for treatment and rehabilitation.
‘This is a responsibility of parents, teachers, civil society, administration, health, and police etc., each and every one of us because together we will surely win this battle too,’ the press release stated.
