Dimapur, February 22

An office of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has been inaugurated in Dimapur. The director of local newspaper Nagaland Post, Ao Chuba Yaden inaugurated the office at the veterinary office on February 22.
Chuba Yaden was representing the editor-in-chief of Nagaland Post Geoffrey Yaden. Chuba Yaden reminded the gathering about the Constitution of India which provides animal protection by Article 51(g) ensuring compassion for all living creatures. The speech dwelt on the need for establishing a hospital for animals to ensure that adequate treatment are provided and observed it as an important aspect in impacting the principles of SPCA. He further underlined the need for creating awareness about the objectives and activities of SPCA with the rise in number of domestic animals in Nagaland. The speech further stated that slaughter if animals has to be done in a scientific and humane manner.
Informing that the Government of India was taking the issue of animal welfare with all seriousness the chief guest felt that it was imperative to educate oneself against I’ll treatment of animals. He was optimistic that the dynamism of the present office bearers of SPCA would bring Dimapur to national focus as a dynamic and rising branch.
In the programme SDO (C) James Swu, representing the deputy commissioner of Dimapur, who is also the president of SPCA of Dimapur (ex officio), expressed gratefulness to the CMO Dimapur for providing a space for the much needed SPCAs office. He also appealed to one and all, especially the nongovernmental organizations to support the cause of the SPCA. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Peseyie also attended the programme.
What is Cruelty to Animals?
Animal cruelty is when someone hurts an animal or does not care for an animal responsibly, like not giving a dog or cat food and water. It is against the law to be cruel to or harm animals, even your own pets. It’s also called animal abuse, or neglect.
Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse or animal neglect, is the human infliction of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, for purposes other than self-defence or survival. More narrowly, it can be the causing of harm or suffering for specific gain, such as killing animals for food or for their fur; opinions differ about the extent of cruelty associated with a given method of slaughter. Cruelty to animals sometimes encompasses inflicting harm or suffering for personal amusement, as in zoosadism.
Laws concerning animal cruelty are designed to prevent needless cruelty. Divergent approaches to such laws occur in different jurisdictions throughout the world. For example, some laws govern methods of killing animals for food, clothing, or other products, and other laws concern the keeping of animals for entertainment, education, research, or pets. Cruelty to animals is not the same thing as disrespect towards animals.
In broad terms, there are three conceptual approaches to the issue of cruelty to animals. The animal welfare position holds that there is nothing inherently wrong with using animals for human purposes, such as food, clothing, entertainment, and research, but that it should be done in a way that minimizes unnecessary pain and suffering, sometimes referred to as “humane” treatment.
