The dead of any human being, whether young or old, great or small, is same in the eyes of God. It is also true in the eyes of human beings when we reflect on the value of each human life. But, on the other hand, when we consider the extent of influence some people exert on others and the difference they make on other people’s life, we esteem some people better than others. Their absence is missed differently as much as their presence is felt. That might be the reason why someone has rightly said that history is the story of great men. Late Z Katiry, who passed away on October 25, 2019, is one such person.

In the context of the Pochury people, Z Katiry was definitely a great man. An educationist, a civil servant, a legislator, a public leader, he wore many hats during his life time. A very well informed leader, he was well versed on a wide variety of subjects. From literature to politics, from history to economics, he was well conversant in all these topics of social concern. Undoubtedly, he was head and shoulder above the best leaders of his generation. His sharp mind and analytical acumen were truly admirable. Even during the last moment of his life, as he battled with various health complications, he maintained his cool and faced the reality of life with stoical outlook.

Z Katiry is no more! Death, the Great Leveller, has brought down this tall leader. But his name shall live on in the memory of the Pochury people. Of notable remembrance the contribution made by Z Katiry, is the settlement of the near about three decades old land issue of the Pochury Baptist Church Council (PBCC) Mission Centre. This happened at a time when the Baptist of Pochury were caught in a catch-22 situation due to difference of opinion on the location of the Mission Centre. He took the bull by the horn and mobilised public opinion for final settlement of the vexed issue. He was the President of the Pochury Hoho, then known as Pochury Public Forum, when the chronic imbroglio was resolved. PBCC shall remember his statesmanship and courage. As we recollect the fond memories of our association with him and the influence of his leadership on us, we mourn his dead and convey our deepest condolence to his family.

As a fallen tree creates instant emptiness in its vicinity, his departure has created a vacuum in our society. But as the absence of an old tree offers enough space for new seeds to sprout up and take its place, may his testimony provide an inspiration to the upcoming generation to take the vision and mission of Z Katiry to greater and higher plane.

Rev. Rümatho Nyusou,
Executive Secretary,
Pochury Baptist Church Council
