Dimapur, Dec. 18 (EMN): Nagaland tightened its grip over Manipur on the second day of the ongoing Ranji Trophy (Plate Group) match at the Videocon Academy Ground in Kolkata.

Thanks to a century from overnight batsman Shrikant Mundhe, and a plucky fifty from the wrecker-in-chief of Manipur’s first innings Imliwati Lemtur, Nagaland could put up a first innings score of 400 all out—a lead of 284.

Mundhe, unbeaten on 68 overnight, went on to compile 148 off 242 deliveries; Lemtur hit 52 off 72 balls. He had taken 7-25 earlier on the first day.

For Manipur, MD Sultan Karim took three wickets.

Facing a massive first innings deficit of 284, Manipur’s second innings got off to shaky start, losing its opener Santosh Singh when the score was 15 in the seventh over. At close, they wobbled their way to 84 for the loss of three wickets in 31 overs.  Wicketkeeper-batsman K Narisingh Yadav had to retire hurt. At the close of play on day two, Manipur were still trailing by 200 runs.

For Nagaland, Stuart Binny, Lemtur and Jonathan Rongsen shared one wicket apiece. With two more days still left to play, Nagaland appears to be headed towards a certain victory over their next-door neighbours.
