DIMAPUR, AUGUST 5 : On Friday, some vicinities of Dimapur town woke to flooded neighborhoods due to the unexpected rian in the wee hours. While many people have been praying for rain in Dimapur to soothe the temperature that Dimapur had been reeling from, vendors at the Supermarket now wish that there was no downpour however hot the conditions may have been.

This, they explained, is not because they enjoy the heat but owing to the hardship they have to face with floods, garbage and thick mud after every downpour.
The Dimapur supermarket is one of the most prominent landmarks in the city–and always attracts media attention in the social media after rain. Citizens and vendors have no option but to endure the unhygienic debris and local flotsam and jetsam.

A group of women vendors who have been running their business for more than a decade there, was more then happy to share that the place had not been developed since the last time they can remember. “The Dimapur Municipal Council collects Rs.10 on a daily basis and the Development Authority Nagaland (DAN) collects Rs.20 daily as tax but there is no development even with the market shed, only for the sweepers who clean the area early morning” the womenfolk said.

If only there were proper drainages at least, if not for the roads and the marketing shed, the area would have been decent enough for us to sit comfortably, a vendor said. The only time the marketplace is dry is during winter.

When queried about the market place, which is near the Dimapur bus station, the vendors replied that the place was too small to accommodate the ‘mushrooming vendors.’ They also explained that the place was no less with the present market place as that location goes through intense flood and because of which they flatly refuse to shift.

While they make this statement, it is clear that many government constructions go to waste when the already existing ones could have been revamped.

The vendors stated that they had no leaders to lead them that they could press the authorities in concern for development and address their grievances.
