Dimapur, November 10: A two-day capacity building programme on implementation of integrated catchment area treatment plant was graced by Pukhayi Sumi, Parliamentary Secretary of Soil & Water Conservation, in the conference hall of the Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation, Kohima.

On the occasion, the chief guest released the Soil and Water Conservation Management and GIS Application manual published by the Department.

In his address, Pukhayi Sumi appealed the department officers and field staff to work with a vision and sincerity by being accountable and responsible assigned to them. He also encouraged the participants to recommit themselves in their duties and contribute towards rebuilding the society in their own capacity.

Director of Soil & Water Conservation, Peter K Rengma, in his speech, apprised the trainees on the purpose of the training and also dwelt on the importance of adopting corrective measures to reduce sediment load and increase the sustainability of the catchment area.

The keynote address was delivered by Khekiho Shohe, SCO (Forest), who also stressed on the importance of a comprehensive plan and judicious management of natural resources for controlling silt erosion and minimising the sediment to a minimum level.

Shohe also strongly opined that it was one of the best solutions for sustainable Jhum cultivation.

The project approaches and implementation was dealt by Vilehu Nguzhu, Joint Director, while T Mar presented on soil testing and mapping and importance of soil health cards.

Over 60 technical field staff from four districts of Kohima, Dimapur, Phek and Zunheboto registered for the two days training program.
