Dimapur, July 14 (EMN): The 3rd Nagaland State Angling Competition was held at Lavi lake, on July 13 in Dimapur. Altogether 260 anglers from Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Karnataka, West Bengal and Nagaland competed for the top honours.

The competition was organised by the Anglers’  Association Nagaland in collaboration with the department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, stated an update that was received here on Sunday.

The commissioner-secretary for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Senti Ao, attended the prize distribution ceremony as the special guest of the event. He said angling is a principal sport. He  acknowledged those who started the association in Nagaland.

With the increase of awareness for sport fishing in the state, Ao said that organising such events will educate the people about the importance to conserve aquatic biodiversity. Such endeavour will also discourage the public and restrain themselves from using poison, dynamite (explosive) and electric for fishing, he added.

Informing that the department is putting efforts to popularise sport fisheries, Ao said that the state has potential for the sport that provide entertainment, generates employment and support the development of several ancillary activities including eco-tourism.

Hrishikesh who emerged champion walked away with a cash prize of INR 50,000 along with a trophy and certificate. First runner-up S Premjit received a cash prize of INR 30,000 with certificate and second runner-up Sani Pongen pocketed INR 20,000 with certificate. Subash Chand and Abdul who finished in fourth and fifth position received a cash award of INR 15,000 and INR 10,000 respectively.

Other 35 participants were presented angling gears, accessories and goodies.

Internationally renowned angler, Derek D’Souza who is the technical advisor to AAN greeted the anglers on the occasion.
